50's Dresses and Portrait Miniatures

I got a 50's dress pattern in the winter and (since it's short sleeved) I couldn't make it 'till Easter.

Originally the dress didn't have the brown band at the bottom, but it looked kinda out of proportion, so on went the band!

I've always kinda wanted a pink gingham dress, so I made one!

The hat used to look sort of like a turtle shell, so I put some flowers on it and now it's cute!

These miniatures are of Marie-Anne de Cupis de Camargo (1710- 1770), the first ballet dancer to take the heels off her shoes and to shorten her skirts (to calf-length).

Three weeks old!

Or at least they were yesterday! They are growing so fast and are just starting to get fluffy!

You can't tell in this picture, but Bitsy has little white hairs frosting around his eyes, on the edges of his ears, and on his legs!

Peach and Bitsy are the sweetest of the three, they love to be cuddled.

Squeaky still lives up to her name, she has quite the little attitude!

Kittens

I went to see the kittens again today, sorry, no pictures. They are getting so big! They're one week and five days old and have the tiniest little noses ever! Peach purred today and they all have very sweet personalities. Bitsy is getting little white eyebrows!

So, anyone want Peach or Squeaky? I'd like to know soon, because if no one is going to take one I won't tame them. Mom doesn't really want three more kitties and I'd hate to leave one all by itself! So, really, anyone want a kitten?

Bitsy, Squeaky, and Peach

Grandma and Gandpa's cat had more kittens! And since there was some conflict over the names last time, I decided to name them silly names. (These are just their kitten names, when they get new homes they'll probably be renamed!)

Squeaky. She squeaks instead of mewing, it's pretty cute!

So, does anyone want a kitten?? We can't have all of them, Mom doesn't necessarily want two girl kitties attracting strays, but she says one might be all right, so anyone want a girl or even all three?

Benwick

About 2 1/2 weeks ago Benwick went missing. We were all really hoping that he was just on a hunting trip, but on Friday Mom and Lily were walking and they smelled something funny in the ditch, it was poor little Benwick. :'( I'll miss that chipper little fluffball.

Benwick at 10 days old. His eyes were only half open!

Knightley

For those who were wondering why there haven't been any pictures of Knightley lately, he has always been a bit of a scaredy-cat and the kittens proved to be too much for his nerves. So, being a sensible cat, he just went to his secondary house to live. (We aren't quite sure where that is, but we're pretty darn sure he's got one!) That being said, here are a few (of the many) pictures of Knightley.

While we were in Williamsburg, Wentie found a new nook. It's inside the wall!!

See the hole in the corner? He climbs in the wall, and then down the inside, clinging to the mortar!

Tangled dress: Part 2; Finished!

I'm sorry I've been so lazy with blogging lately. :-/ I'll try to be better in the future....

Any way, the dress is finished! And has been for almost two months. I was going to make it, but as time kept slipping by, Mommy and I decided that she should make it instead (I got to cut it out and hand sew the eyelets, though!). Twelfth Night was a ton of fun! We danced, ate king cake, and played games.

Elaina (as Cinderella), me, Ashly (as Catherine Morland), Adriana (as Shirley Temple), Rebecca (as Tiana), and Kasey (as someone from Despicable Me).

Here's the whole outfit, thanks to the Rykens for letting me borrow their frying pan!

...and mine. Sorry the lace isn't the same, but it's as good as it gets! And while it looks like she has piping on the edges of the over bodice, I have binding. (Mom didn't feel like piping it, I wonder why?! ;))

Sleeves and more lace on her's...

...and a sleeve and some lace on mine. You probably can't tell, but the lace is actually pink! I was so pleased to find lace in both pink and white. We weren't able to put lace on the sleeves though, because the fabric is so stretchy. Fortunately, Mom thought of "lettucing" the edge! Did you see the purple swirls on the sleeves? My Dad (he's so great!) drew those on with a fabric marker! They are almost identical to her's!

...and the scrolls on mine. Once again, my parents worked wonders. Dad found screencaps, blew them up, sketched the skirt design, scanned it, resized it on the computer, printed it, and resized and printed it a few more times! Mommy traced it on to the dress and colored it in. Although Rapunzel has embroidered scrolls, I thought that fabric marker would work just fine!

The front. Rapunzel has a petticoat with lace at the bottom, but we didn't have the time or inclination to make one.

And the back. There are supposed to be little pink buttons at the top, maybe sometime I'll get around to putting those on!

Didn't Mommy do a wonderful job?! And Dad too, for that matter? I think so!

Kitty?

On Sunday the 16th of January, Wentworth went missing. I got worried because he had been vomiting saliva a few days before, and I thought he went away to die. But then the next week, my friend Elita Candler told me that they found a gray, striped kitty in the engine compartment of their car after they got home from church! I got really excited and told my mom, but she was pretty sure she had seen Wentie in the evening, so he couldn't be at the Candlers.

This afternoon the Candlers said that they had Jerry (our farmer friend who fixes our male kitties) come to fix their cat, and he told them that the cat was already fixed. So they invited us over to look at the cat, and as soon as they carried him out, I knew it was Wentie. (Really! I'm not just saying that to be dramatic. ;)) So Wentie is back!!! ♥ Yea! Isn't God just so kind and merciful to me?
A cat's memory evidently lasts longer than I expected! As we were coming home he lay on my lap, but as soon as we drove in front of our house, he ran over to the window and looked at it! I put him in the garage to see if Benwick remembered him. Oh, my! Was Benwick glad to see him! He didn't just remember Wentie, he was ecstatic! He rubbed him, he nuzzled him, he followed him everywhere! Needless to say, Bingley was neither ecstatic nor glad, more like confused. Poor Bingley! ;) Later I refilled their water dish and Wentie remembered where it went, and ran ahead to show me. And then I was petting him inside and he jumped off my lap and ran straight to the door as if he never went away!

Tangled dress: Part 1

As you know, I watched Tangled and really liked it. And what you might not know is that we like to celebrate Twelfth Night! So, you add those together and (if you're me) you decide that you just *have* to go to Twelfth Night as Rapunzel. But to go as her, you of course have to make a new dress!

Here's her dress...

...and here's the fabrics I picked! They really aren't as blue as they look in the pic. From right to left they are: a pink sheer knit (for the sleeves), pink cotton (for the striped sleeves and piping), pale purple (for the bodice), slightly darker purple (for the skirt and striped sleeves), and an even darker purple (for the center front panel).

First things first, look at what I just made!

It's a 1950's poodle skirt with a kitty on it!

Modeling it with me are the two kittens that I just got!

Captain Benick and Captain Wentworth. Aren't they adorable? ;)

If they look familiar, don't be surprised, I've posted about them before!

It always cracks me up how much kittens smack when they're drinking cream.

A double-decker cat box with gothic shaped doorways!

And there are doors for easier access! Notice the mat in the top box. That is no normal mat. That is a heater-mat! And, it has a friend that goes in the bottom box. Yes indeedy, I have some spoiled cats!

I just went to see Tangled last night, and I really, really, liked it! It was just the right amount of adventure, romance, comedy, and touchingness.

This picture is my favorite. But really, it's just because of her hair!

Mystery!...or something...

So, well, I was going to have this be a mystery post, but I was just too darn excited! My Grandma and Grandpa's cat just had a litter of five darling kittens (and really, I'm serious, most kittens this age look kinda like little rats, but not these tiny fluffballs!) and, guess what, they let me name them! Now, isn't that exciting?

Clockwise from the top (counting heads, not tails) they are: Fritz, Elsa, Peter, Hansel, and Georg.

Aren't they so sweet all curled on top of each other? They are about 1 1/2- 2 weeks old.

This is Elsa, the cry-baby.

The Mystery in the Backyard

If you read my dad's blog (which you most likely do) you will know that we have a certain mystery project that we are working on.

Well, here are the "towers"!

After putting in the posts, we cut and sanded -- and sanded, and sanded-- a big long board.

And here's Bingley, adorable as always. ( I do love cats and this is my blog so you'll just have to get used to all the cat pictures!)

And here's sweetie Knightley and the beautiful sunset.

That sunset was really very pretty!
